Florida rocks as our PhD Committee ponder the issues of the day.  Will Albert Pujols be the next LeBron James?  Is quadruple-A baseball coming to a small market near you?  Did Bernie Madoff kill the Mets and will “The Donald” be the new Steinbrenner?  Then the podcast gets even better as Ed interviews Mr. Sports Travel aka Joe Connor about the Grapefruit League.  The podcast concludes as Farley plays us out with the fight song for our first team of the season, the World Champion San Francisco Giants.  Bye Bye Baby.

Tampa

This week is Rays‘ week with our podcast featuring the Tampa Bay Rays being released on Friday, August 27th.  Tampa is on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The Rays play in St. Petersburg, 24 miles to the south.

Tampa is a delightful city (and former home to Yankees late owner George Steinbrenner).  The Rays home, Tropicana Field has a dome and is a great place to watch a game and as you can see from the video below – make friends.

Kroc Saved The Show in San Diego

Ray Kroc

This week is Padres‘ week with our podcast featuring the San Diego Padres scheduled to be released on Friday, July 16th.  In 1969, the National League expanded with the creation of the Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres.  Five years later, the struggling Padres had been sold conditionally to Washington DC area grocery-chain owner, Joseph Danzansky.  Danzansky planned to move the Padres to Washington D.C.  Ray Kroc read that the Padres were for sale in a Chicago newspaper.

The Padres received a telephone call informing them that Ray Kroc was interested in purchasing the team. Padre president, Buzzie Bavasi asked how many people were in Kroc’s group.  The answer was one.  At the 12th hour, Kroc purchased the Padres for $12 million dollars and kept the team in America’s Finest City, San Diego.  To put things in perspective, one year earlier George Steinbrenner and a group of investors had purchased the New York Yankees for $8.8 million.
