William Edward White preceded Fleetwood Walker as the first black man to play “major” league baseball, even though he lived his life as a white man by playing one game for the Providence Grays on June 21, 1879. Walker of course made his debut in 1884. Bud Fowler is considered to be the first black “professional” baseball player making his professional debut in 1878, a year before William Edward White. When Fowler was 14 years old, he played for an all white pro team as early as 1872. Even though I’ve been collecting Negro League memorabilia for 30 years, a personal friend of mine, Phil Dixon is the leading Negro League historian in America and probably the world. He has been collecting longer than I have and has several books to prove it. Check him out.
