The Professor takes the lead (as usual)
May 1st marks the first measurement of our Baseball PhD MLB Predictions Contest. The concept is simple. Pick the eight teams that will make the Major League Baseball playoffs and get a point for each team that you pick correct. The only score that counts is when the season concludes on Wednesday, September 29th.
9 Participants
This contest has nine participants. Each participant has predicted that the Red Sox and Phillies will make the 2011 playoffs. Consequently, everyone’s other six picks will determine the outcome of the contest. If the season were to end on April 30th, the 8 playoff teams would be:
American League National League
New York Yankees Philadelphia Phillies
Cleveland Indians St. Louis Cardinals
Texas Rangers Colorado Rockies
LA Angels/Tampa Bay Rays Florida Marlins
No Participant has picked the Indians, Rays or Marlins to make the playoffs
Last year’s defending champion, Professor Bruce Bukiet currently has four points (Yankees, Rangers, Phillies & Cardinals). In second with 3.5 points (Yankees, Angels, Phillies & Rockies) is Rodney Johnson form playballexperience.com.
4 Participants are tied in third with three points
Andre Lower (Yankees, Phillies & Rockies) from baseballbypositions.com is tied with each member of our PhD Committee with three points each. We’ll see in another 30 days if Professor Bukiet’s’ power of math wins the day again.

The power of math won the day as Professor Bruce Bukiet from the New Jersey Institute of Technology won our 2010 Major League Baseball predictions contest. Bukiet successfully picked 6 of the 8 teams that made the post season.
“I felt like chasing Secretariat all season long,” said Ed Kasputis, Creative Director for Baseball PhD. “Professor Bukiet did a great job of using math and baseball intuition to have a great year. I’m going to the library to check out a calculus book in honor of the Professor.”
Kasputis along with two others (Mark Rantala and Baseball Bob) finished second by picking 4 of the 8 post season teams. Ed Kasputis will be interviewing Professor Bukiet during our podcast featuring the Pittsburgh Pirates which will be released on Friday, October 8th. Like Professor Bukiet always says, “a day without math is like a day without sunshine.”

It’s like deja-vu all over again.
Yogi Berra once said, “it’s like deja-vu all over again“. The standings for our 2010 MLB Predictions contest are the same today as June 1st. With the completion of summer, Professor Bruce Bukiet is still in first as he readies his lecture hall for another year at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Hopefully the Professor’s math department has not been rocked by budget cuts. Ed Kasputis and Mark Rantala are again tied for second as they were on June 1st.
The Professor has widened his lead. On June 1st, the Professor had 4.5 points. Today he has 6 points, meaning that he has chosen 6 of the 8 teams that would make the playoffs if the season were to end today. Kasputis and Rantala have 4 points. 90 days ago they had 3.5 points. “I feel like Gilligan trying to catch the Professor” said Ed Kasputis. “I think his lead is too great.” The Major League Season ends on Sunday, October 3rd.

Professor Bukiet and Baseball Bob are tied with 4.5 points each
We are four months into the season with Professor Bruce Bukiet from the New Jersey Institute of Technology holding steady. This month Baseball Bob (the smartest man we know) has surged to tie the professor. Both brainiacs have 4.5 points. Both men predicted that the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals would make the playoffs. Currently the Cardinals are tied for first in the NL Central with the Cincinnati Reds. This is how each man got one half point.
Bukiet also predicted that the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves would make the playoffs. Baseball Bob has predicted that the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants would make the playoffs. If the season were to end today, all of these teams would make the playoffs.
Tied for third are Baseball PhD’s Who and playballexperience.com‘s Rodney Johnson (Johnson is also the official scorer for the Arizona Diamondbacks). Both man and boy predicted that the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals would also make the playoffs. Who also predicted that the Texas Rangers would make the post season while Johnson predicted that the San Francisco Giants will also still be playing in October.
Can anyone catch Professor Bukiet? The key teams to watch are Tampa Bay and Texas. If both of these teams continue to play well, the Professor’s legacy will continue to grow.
