3 out of 4 Years
Professor Bruce Bukiet from the New Jersey Institute of Technology has won his 3rd Baseball PhD predictions contest in the last four years (2010, 2011 & 2013). Bukiet successfully predicted seven of this year’s ten Major League Baseball playoff teams (Rays, Tigers, A’s, Cardinals, Dodgers, Braves & Reds). The key to Bukiet’s victory was that he was the only participant in our predictions contest who predicted that the defending World Champion San Francisco Giants would not make this year’s post season.
Bukiet did not predict the firing of Dusty Baker by the Cincinnati Reds this week unlike Baseball PhD Committee member, Farley Dillinger who has been predicting Baker’s demise since 2010. Dillinger, a Cubs fan has a long memory of Baker’s October exploits.
Four participants finished one team behind the Professor with 6 of their teams making the MLB Post-season. Congratulations to Baseball PhD Committee members, David Matejzcyk (Tigers, Indians, A’s, Cardinals, Reds & Dodgers) and Mark Rantala (Rays, Tigers, Indians, Braves, Reds & Dodgers) along with Andre Lower from baseballbypositions.com (Rays, Tigers, A’s, Braves, Reds & Dodgers) and Australian Justin Woods (Tigers, A’s, Rays, Cardinals, Reds & Braves).
Will any mortal have the guts to predict that this year’s World Series Champion will not make the playoffs next season? Professor Bukiet truly understands the power of math.
Professor Bukiet will be honored during our League Championship Series podcast (Episode 228) which will be released on Friday, October 11, 2013.

Rest in Peace
A great visionary and American leader, Steve Jobs passed away today. It was Jobs’ creations that have permitted the staff at Baseball PhD to do what we do. We use MacBook Pros and Garageband to create and edit our podcasts and iPhones to share our ideas. Leadership is influence and the world has been greatly influenced by the vision of this great man. Thank you for our cool stuff.

This week our podcast will feature the League Championship Series on Friday, October 7th. Who would have thought in the baseball world that the MLB Playoffs would start without the Boston Red Sox? Red Sox Nation grieves as they’re boys of summer gave them a miserable September (and April).
Ed Kasputis will interview Matt Kory from overthemonster.com about the team he loves who failed to love him back this fall. Ed and Dave Matejczyk will also review the movie Moneyball. Maybe Billy Beane should have taken the GM job with the Red Sox? Was Wednesday, September 28, 2011 the most dramatic day in MLB regular season history?

The Power of Math beats Baseball Intuition again
This week is Brewers‘ week with our podcast featuring the Milwaukee Brewers being released on Friday, September 30th. It’s been a great year for both the Brewers and Baseball PhD. Who could script the close of this exciting baseball regular season?
In the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox are tied for the wild card position with one game to go. In the National League it’s the same with the Cardinals and Braves also tied for the wild card position with one game to go. Could the regular season be extended on Thursday with the 163rd game of the regular season?
While there still remains much uncertainty regarding these two final playoff spots, Professor Bruce Bukiet from the New Jersey Institute of Technology has again won our 2011 MLB Predictions Contest. Buiket successfully predicted that the Yankees, Tigers and Rangers would make the playoffs. Bukiet further predicted that the Red Sox, Braves and Cardinals would make the playoffs. Should the Red Sox make the playoffs, this would be the second year in a row that the Professor has successfully chosen all 4 American League Playoff teams. Ed Kasputis will interview and congratulate Professor Buiket for his learned predictions during our next podcast.
